Amblyopia and Strabismus

Amblyopia and Strabismus

Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, and strabismus, often referred to as crossed eyes, are two eye conditions that frequently occur in childhood but can also affect adults. Amblyopia involves decreased vision in one eye due to abnormal visual development early in life, whereas strabismus involves the misalignment of the eyes. Both conditions can significantly affect vision and depth perception if not treated promptly.

Symptoms of Amblyopia and Strabismus

Amblyopia:

  • Poor vision in one eye
  • Squinting or shutting an eye
  • Difficulty with depth perception
  • Head tilting

Strabismus:

  • Misaligned eyes (one eye may turn in, out, up, or down)
  • Double vision
  • Squinting or closing one eye to see clearly
  • Eyestrain or headache

Causes and Diagnosis

Amblyopia develops when there is a breakdown in how the brain and eye work together, often due to strabismus, significant differences in prescription between the two eyes, or other conditions that prevent clear vision in one eye.

Strabismus can be caused by issues with the muscles controlling eye movement, neurological problems, or congenital defects.

Diagnosis for both conditions involves a comprehensive eye examination that may include visual acuity tests, binocular vision tests, and an assessment of eye alignment and movement.

Treatment Options

Early detection and treatment are crucial for both conditions to prevent long-term vision problems.

Amblyopia:

  • Corrective Eyewear: Glasses or contact lenses to improve vision.
  • Patching: Covering the stronger eye to force the weaker eye to work harder, improving its vision.
  • Vision Therapy: Exercises to improve coordination and the eye's ability to focus.

Strabismus:

  • Corrective Eyewear: Glasses or contact lenses may help with some forms of strabismus.
  • Eye Exercises: Specific exercises can strengthen the muscles and improve coordination.
  • Surgery: In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to adjust the muscles controlling eye movement.

Schedule Your Eye Examination

If you suspect that you or your child has amblyopia, strabismus, or both, it's important to schedule a comprehensive eye examination as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment are key to achieving the best outcomes. Our team at City Optics is here to provide expert care and support every step of the way.
