What is an OCT scan and is it necessary?

What is an OCT Scan and Is It Necessary?

An Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan is an advanced imaging test that provides detailed, cross-sectional images of the retina, the layer of tissue at the back of the eye. OCT scans are a non-invasive way for optometrists to see the layers of the retina, helping to detect and monitor eye conditions that could otherwise lead to vision loss.

How Does an OCT Scan Work?

Using light waves, an OCT scan creates detailed images of your retina’s layers, allowing your optometrist to see any abnormalities or signs of disease. It’s similar to an ultrasound but uses light rather than sound to capture high-resolution images of your eye's internal structure.

The scan is quick and painless, usually taking only a few minutes, and provides a highly accurate view of your eye health.

Is an OCT Scan Necessary?

Whether or not you need an OCT scan depends on your eye health and risk factors. While OCT scans aren’t required for every routine eye test, they are highly beneficial for detecting and monitoring certain conditions, such as:

Your optometrist may recommend an OCT scan if you have risk factors such as a family history of glaucoma, macular degeneration, or other eye diseases. For those without risk factors, OCT scans can still provide a valuable baseline for future comparisons.
