Understanding the basics

Lubricating, or artificial tear, drops top up the moisture on the surface of your eye to ease that dry, gritty or tired feeling. They are designed to support comfort and are one of the most common first steps in a dry eye routine.

Different drops work in slightly different ways — some add moisture, others help hold it in place or steady the tear film — so it can take a little trial to find the one that feels best for your eyes.

Choosing the right drop

Lighter drops suit occasional dryness, while thicker formulas last longer for more stubborn symptoms. If you use drops frequently, preservative-free eye drops are often recommended to reduce the risk of irritation over time.

How to use them

Follow the directions on your product, avoid touching the nozzle to your eye or lashes, and discard single-use vials after use. If you are using more than one product, leave a short gap between them so each has time to settle.
